What to Know About Buying a Freestanding Tub

A freestanding tub is one of the most dramatic elements you can add to a bathroom renovation. Placed correctly, it becomes the visual center of the room. But a freestanding tub also requires specific planning considerations that aren’t always obvious during the inspiration-phase browsing. Here’s what to know before you buy.

Floor Space Requirements

A freestanding tub needs clearance on all sides — ideally 12 to 18 inches from walls on at least three sides to look right and allow comfortable access. Measure your bathroom carefully with tape on the floor to visualize the actual footprint of the tub plus clearance before committing to a size.

Floor Drain and Filler Location

A freestanding tub requires a floor drain (or the ability to run drain plumbing through the floor) and a separate tub filler — either floor-mounted, wall-mounted, or on a deck beside the tub. The location of your existing plumbing stub-outs may influence where the tub can realistically be placed.

Material Considerations

Freestanding tubs come in acrylic, cast iron, and stone resin. Acrylic is the most common choice — lightweight, warm to the touch, and available in many shapes. Cast iron retains heat exceptionally well but is very heavy, which may require floor reinforcement. Stone resin is heavy and premium in feel.

No Shower Combination

Most freestanding tubs cannot accommodate a shower — there’s nowhere to attach a curtain or screen, and the spray would go everywhere. If you need both a tub and a shower, plan a separate shower in the same bathroom.

The Tub Filler Matters

A freestanding tub with an undersized or poorly proportioned tub filler looks awkward. A floor-mounted filler from Riobel or Baril with the right scale and finish is as important to the final look as the tub itself.
