How to Pick the Perfect Bathroom Tile: A Room-by-Room Guide

Tile selection can be overwhelming — the options are genuinely endless. The key to simplifying the decision is understanding that different surfaces in a bathroom have different functional requirements, and letting those requirements guide the selection before considering aesthetics.

Shower Walls

Shower wall tile needs to be water-resistant (almost all tile is), non-porous or low-porosity (to resist staining and absorption), and easy to clean. Large-format tiles (12×24 or larger) are popular because they have fewer grout lines, which means less cleaning and a cleaner visual. Porcelain and ceramic are both excellent choices. Natural stone like marble is beautiful but requires sealing and more maintenance.

Shower Floors

The most important spec for a shower floor tile is slip resistance — look for a wet coefficient of friction rating appropriate for wet floor use. Smaller tiles with more grout lines provide more grip. Mosaic tile (2×2 or smaller) is the traditional shower floor choice for this reason, in addition to being able to accommodate the floor slope more easily than large-format tiles.

Bathroom Floor

The bathroom floor outside the shower needs to balance aesthetics, grip, and durability. Large-format tile looks elegant and is easy to clean; confirm the slip rating. Hexagon formats, cement-look tiles, and wood-look porcelain planks are all popular choices in current renovations.

Feature Walls

A feature wall — often behind the vanity or as an accent in the shower — allows a more dramatic tile choice that would be too busy if used throughout. This is where zellige, textured, or patterned tile often lives in contemporary bathroom designs.
