Most people don’t put much thought into their toilet until it’s time to replace one — and then they discover there are more decisions to make than expected. The rough-in distance is the measurement from your finished wall to the center of the drain pipe on the floor. Standard rough-in in Canadian homes is 12 inches. If yours is 10 or 14 inches, you need a toilet specified for that dimension — not every toilet comes in every rough-in size, so confirm this before you shop.
Elongated bowls are more comfortable for most adults and are now the preferred shape for most renovations. Round bowls take up less depth — about two inches less — which matters in a very small bathroom. If you have the space, elongated is worth it.
Comfort height toilets (also called ADA height) sit a few inches higher than standard toilets, making them easier for adults — especially taller people and older adults — to sit down and stand up. Most renovation clients we work with choose comfort height.
Modern dual-flush toilets use 4.8 litres per full flush and 3 litres for a reduced flush. This is far more efficient than toilets from 20 years ago and reduces water use meaningfully over a year of household use.
