Freestanding Tub vs. Alcove Tub: Which Is Right for Your Bathroom?

One of the most exciting decisions in a bathroom renovation is the tub. And right now, the debate between freestanding soaker tubs and classic alcove tubs is one we have with customers every single week at our Waterloo showroom.

The Case for a Freestanding Tub

Freestanding tubs are statement pieces. They sit in open floor space and are visible from all sides, which means the design of the tub itself is part of the room’s aesthetic. They photograph beautifully and can dramatically increase the perceived luxury of a master bathroom. They work best in larger bathrooms where there’s room to walk around them.

The Case for an Alcove Tub

Alcove tubs fit into a three-wall enclosure and are the most practical, space-efficient option. They’re easier to get in and out of, easier to clean around, and often come with a shower combo — which makes them ideal for a main family bathroom. They’re also typically more affordable than freestanding models.

Space Requirements

In general, you want at least 60″ x 32″ of floor space for a standard alcove tub, and considerably more for a freestanding tub — both for the tub itself and for comfortable access on all sides. Our team can help you assess your floor plan during your showroom visit.

Plumbing Considerations

Freestanding tubs require a floor-mount filler or a wall-mount faucet positioned to reach the tub — the plumbing rough-in needs to be planned at the framing stage. Alcove tubs use standard wall-mount tub faucets. If you’re renovating without opening walls, an alcove tub is usually the simpler path.

Cost Comparison

Alcove tubs start lower in price and remain more budget-friendly overall. Freestanding tubs range widely — from entry-level acrylic models to high-end cast iron or stone resin options. At Vanity Mart, we carry options at multiple price points in both categories so there’s something for every budget.
